Finnish HEMA fencer Minna Vasarainen has trained HEMA since 2017 and has a background in boffering (padded‑weapon fighting). “For me, the most enjoyable part of fencing and martial arts as a whole is their inherent playfulness. It offers endless opportunities for learning, exploring, and growing. I want to keep improving, and I want to do it together.” She says. Minna holds a PhD in Education and has been instructing training sessions at EHMS for several years. When she’s not competing, she’s happy to contribute as a coach, referee, judge, or simply help with whatever needs doing.
Minna will be giving a workshop on analytical fencing with longsword. In this hands‑on workshop, you will explore analytical approaches to fencing through drills and sparring exercises. The focus will be on observing and understanding fencing actions — both your own and those of your training partners.
The workshop is open to all skill levels, and we will work in a source‑agnostic way.
The goal of the workshop is to provide a set of simple, practical tools for analyzing fencing — on your own terms.
Core themes of the fencing analysis include:
1. Initiative
2. Timing
3. Distance
